The cold winter months are upon us once again this year. As we bundle and layer clothes on to keep warm and dry please remember to keep a couple things in mind!
Pets Get Cold Too!
Making sure outdoor pets have proper housing and bedding is extremely important! A thick layer of straw and an old quilt help to insulate and keep the pet warm. They should always have shelter to get completely out of wind and rain and always have unfrozen water to drink.
Salt Hurts Pets!
Regular salt that we use every winter to melt ice can cause serious health issues and even death in pets if ingested. Make sure to not let your pet eat any snow or drink out of puddles. Also, wiping off the bottom of their paws after playing outside can help. Salt can cause the bottom of their paws to become sore and cracked. Boots, Socks or disposable booties are a big help.
Play Time is Important!
When the snow starts to fly and taking a walk is not something that makes you jump for joy, just remember if you don’t take as many walks as Fido is used to he will need extra indoor play time and toys. Keeping your pet active in the winter months is important for maintaining a healthy weight and attitude.
Please keep all furbabies in mind these next few cold months and make sure to report any neglected, lost or stray dogs to your local humane officer, you may be saving a life.
